Every week the same scenario plays out at our family game night. I come home from work, we have dinner, and then we pick out a game to play together as a family. Things seem to be going fine as we set up the game, and we all take our first few turns. Then things start to go wrong. My ten-year-old daughter usually tries to go for the younger ones during their turn, and she tries to skip her older brothers’ turn by saying that he already went. We have tried ignoring it, giving in to her, and even giving her more attention during the game. Not only have none of these things worked, but, we feel that it’s unfair to our other children who are participating cooperatively. Both my husband and I want her to be part of the evening, but, we don’t know how to keep the peace and yet, give every child the attention that they deserve. Do you have any suggestions on how to help our family game night? What a challenging situation you face every week.

Do you get the sense that you need to be noticed and appreciated more than other people seem to, and that sometimes you push for this in a perhaps unbalanced way? The term is often used as a criticism of the behavior of children, for instance, as if looking for attention was a bad thing. And if the term is applied to adults, it’s even more pejorative, indicating that that person is somehow immature and childish, and ought to ‘grow up’.

We all find it pretty painful to hear this kind of language used about us. It makes us feel unappreciated, and defensive, and even angry. It feels unfair. And it is, in truth, unfair. Because everybody – and that means everybody – has a deep and fundamental need for attention – both to receive it from others and to give it to others. This is one of the basic human needs.

It’s important to understand how the basic needs that we share as humans drive our lives. In order to function well and be reasonably healthy and happy, a certain number of basic requirements beyond air, food, water and shelter have to be adequately met.

I’m dying to read the book, but it also made me think of some ripple-causers in my own life: attention-seekers, egotists, and those of us who, sometimes, can’t help but look at them. Giant waves have been dismissed as myths, but they very much exist, as Casey tells us; we’re just not really sure how they happen. Similarly shrouded in mystery is how certain people we meet in life get to a place where they need constant attention. There’s a condition I often tell these people to Google: Acquired Situational Narcissism, which if doesn’t make things completely clear, is certainly good for a laugh.

But I’m less interested in the cause than the effect. I’m thinking here of a young woman who was visiting some friends of mine recently in New York. Saying that this girl—who may have been like the prettiest girl at her high school, but wasn’t anything special for NYC, and did not say one interesting thing over the entire few days we hung out—was all about the drama would be an understatement. Wherever she went, wherever she was going, she needed those around her to be aware that she was special.

And the attention didn’t need to be positive; there were arguments with boyfriends over the phone, slights recorded and tears loudly shed—it didn’t really matter as long as everyone knew that something was up.

What It’s REALLY Like To Date An Attention-Seeker

For me, I used to think I was “unlovable” wah, wah, wah For one, it gave me self-confidence and value instead of putting myself down. Since then, I’ve learned there are essentially two ways to date: Dating for attention and dating with standards. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Attention seekers want outside validation because we’re lonely. I often think that this is the reason a lot of guys insult girls when they’re on online dating sites.

If you find yourself in one of these behaviors , it is not a time to feel bad. But it is a time to reflect on what you are trying to get from it. What part of you is yearning to be seen, heard and understood and how can we start to receive attention internally instead of externally? The more you seek anything, attention, peace, spirituality, love, happiness you name it the more you compromise your truth. You ultimately value the perception of Joe Schmo and Susie Q more than your own wants and desires.

So you do things to draw connection: An example of this we see is oversharing on social media platforms.
